Company Spotlight: Amy’s Kitchen and Competition!


My favourite ready-made gluten free meal has to be Amy’s Kitchen’s Rice Macaroni & Cheese. If you haven’t tried it yet you’re missing out because it’s divine (even more so with a slice of gluten free bread and ketchup!).

I can’t remember exactly when I first came across Amy’s Kitchen, I think it was either when I noticed them in my local supermarket, or when I went to the Allergy Show in London. Regardless, I was hooked.

The quality of Amy’s Kitchen really is second to none, a lot of time, care and attention has been put into creating each dish, of which there are a few.

Amy’s Kitchen is a family business… with every member of the family taking part. The company was started in 1987, when Amy was born. Her mom and dad, Rachel and Andy Berliner, carefully nurtured the company as well as the child, paying constant attention to every aspect of its day to day activities and providing the vision that has made Amy’s so successful.

There are still a lot of products that I am yet to try but I’m sure I will at some point! Here are a few quick reviews of what I have tasted so far.

Gluten Free Bean & Cheese Burrito
This is a fabulous, quick (microwave in 3 minutes) meal if you’re short of time, or just want something quick for lunch. It’s absolutely packed full of filling and flavour but not heavy, so you don’t feel overly full when you’re finished. The ‘wrap’ that it’s in really maintains it’s shape and consistency, it doesn’t fall apart when you’re trying to eat it which is always a good thing.

Thai Red Curry
This is not only gluten free but dairy free too. It’s a very generous sized portion with lots of lovely, crunchy vegetables including broccoli, onion, carrots, red pepper, green beans and butternut squash. It comes with rice so you don’t need to add anything to make it a complete meal. It has a nice little kick to it, not overly spicy though so those who don’t like fiery food will be able to enjoy it too.

Broccoli & Cheddar Bake
Cheese, broccoli and pasta, how could you go wrong?! What I really love about this is the crunchy breadcrumb topping which is just brilliant straight from the oven. The cheddar sauce is very flavoursome without being ‘too cheesy’ which can sometimes make a meal too rich and not nice. That isn’t the case with this, it really has a lovely flavour. Again, the portion is a decent size so it makes a great evening meal in those cold Winter months, a real tummy warmer.

Gluten Free Vegetable Lasagne
I think this is the only one so far I haven’t been over keen on. Whilst the flavour was good the dish really didn’t maintain it’s form and just sort of glooped out onto the plate. I know appearance isn’t everything, but if a meal doesn’t look good, it does alter the way it tastes and I feel with just a bit more attention to the form and consistency of this product, it would be a much more satisfying dish.

Rice Macaroni & Cheese
My favourite! I LOVED macaroni cheese before I was diagnosed with coeliac disease, and it’s not easy to get gluten free macaroni off the shelf (I’ve only found a couple of online resources) so this product really was a welcome addition to my freezer. I believe you can microwave it but it’s so much better from the oven, especially if you get a couple of little burnt bits on top (weird but good!). The pasta and cheese is just perfect. The macaroni maintains it’s form and doesn’t disintegrate like some gluten free pastas can do and the sauce is nice and thick without being sticky or overpowering. A real family favourite this one, could not recommend it higher!
